The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program offers English and academic instruction to help you meet the language proficiency requirements you need to begin studies at Briercrest College.
Take courses focused on building English and academic language skills, intercultural experience, and critical thinking skills. As a member of the Briercrest community, you will be enriched personally, spiritually, and academically through rich campus life.
Results from an accepted English proficiency exam will determine the optimal educational pathway for your success. As one progresses through the program they will actively participate in a variety of individual and group activities that will provide engaging opportunities to develop in the language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students with higher intermediate proficiency will have the opportunity to take a college course in addition to EAP course work.
At the intermediate level you will build strong English skills based on the foundation you already have. You will learn academic skills and critical thinking skills important for any student.
At this level you will continue to advance in academic skills. EAP courses will focus on the following skills.
- Reading academic texts
- Academic listening and speaking skills
- Specialized academic vocabulary
- Academic research skills
- Speaking for presentations, discussion, and debates
- Notetaking skills
- Critical thinking
- TOEFL/ IELTS preparation
At the final level of the program, you will continue to work on your academic English skills while transitioning into a college level program. You will focus on enhancing academic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while taking two college credit courses. This allows you to continue to be supported by your instructors while practicing what you learn in a real classroom environment. Upon completion of this level, you will be eligible for direct entry into a Briercrest College program of your choice.
The English for Academic Purposes program offers in-person classes on the Briercrest campus. Students will be scheduled into regular intensive language classes each day. This schedule will include daily chapels with the entire college student body and additional institutional events throughout the school year.
As part of the EAP program at Briercrest, you will have access to numerous supports, resources, events, and the community.
Community: EAP students will experience being part of the Briercrest community, living in the college dorms, attending chapel, and be able to participate in any school events and activities throughout the year. As all Briercrest College students do, you will receive care and mentoring from Resident Assistants and Directors. We expect that as a member of the Briercrest community, you will be immersed in many meaningful relationships and faith practices which will contribute to your spiritual growth.
