The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program offers three tracks of study for international students. It offers English and academic instruction to help you meet the language proficiency requirements you need to begin studies at Briercrest College.

The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program offers English and academic instruction to help you meet the language proficiency requirements you need to begin studies at Briercrest College.

Take courses focused on building English and academic language skills, intercultural experience, and critical thinking skills. As a member of the Briercrest community, you will be enriched personally, spiritually, and academically through rich campus life.

Results from an accepted English proficiency exam will determine the optimal educational pathway for your success. As one progresses through the program they will actively participate in a variety of individual and group activities that will provide engaging opportunities to develop in the language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students with higher intermediate proficiency will have the opportunity to take a college course in addition to EAP course work.

Levels
Intermediate:
At the intermediate level you will build strong English skills based on the foundation you already have. You will learn academic skills and critical thinking skills important for any student.

High-Intermediate:
At this level you will continue to advance in academic skills. EAP courses will focus on the following skills.

  • Reading academic texts
  • Academic listening and speaking skills
  • Specialized academic vocabulary
  • Academic research skills
  • Speaking for presentations, discussion, and debates
  • Notetaking skills
  • Critical thinking
  • TOEFL/ IELTS preparation

 

EAP Pathway:
At the final level of the program, you will continue to work on your academic English skills while transitioning into a college level program. You will focus on enhancing academic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while taking two college credit courses. This allows you to continue to be supported by your instructors while practicing what you learn in a real classroom environment. Upon completion of this level, you will be eligible for direct entry into a Briercrest College program of your choice.

Program Delivery
The English for Academic Purposes program offers in-person classes on the Briercrest campus. Students will be scheduled into regular intensive language classes each day. This schedule will include daily chapels with the entire college student body and additional institutional events throughout the school year.

Program Features
As part of the EAP program at Briercrest, you will have access to numerous supports, resources, events, and the community.

Community: EAP students will experience being part of the Briercrest community, living in the college dorms, attending chapel, and be able to participate in any school events and activities throughout the year. As all Briercrest College students do, you will receive care and mentoring from Resident Assistants and Directors. We expect that as a member of the Briercrest community, you will be immersed in many meaningful relationships and faith practices which will contribute to your spiritual growth.

International Student Center: International students can access the student center and staff to answer questions about life in Canada and at Briercrest. There will be international events and trips throughout the year to celebrate cultures and discover more about Canada.

Student Resources: You will have access to a variety of campus resources, such as the International Student Centre, the gym facilities, the library, and tutoring in the Academic Resource Centre. Student advisors will be available to discuss any academic needs. 

Admission Requirements
All applicants are required to show proof of English proficiency to be accepted. The exams results will determine the level of entry into the program.

Intermediate – IELTS 5.5 (minimum 5.0 in all areas) – TOEFL iBT 70 (15 or higher in all components) – CAEL 40.

High Intermediate – IELTS 6.0 (minimum 5.5 in all areas) – TOEFL iBT 75 (17 or higher in all components) – CAEL 50

EAP Pathway – IELTS 6.5 (minimum 5.5 in all areas) – TOEFL iBT 79 (18 or higher in all components) – CAEL 60.

Tuition
The tuition and student fees for the English for Academic Purposes program are listed below according to level. This is the typical amount students will pay for one term of the EAP program. Program Intake and Deadline Dates
There are two intake terms for English for Academic Purposes program each year. Each level is 13 weeks long and can be completed in one term.

Intake: September - December
Deadline: March 15th
