Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Grade Point Average (GPA) for a semester calculated?

  • multiplying the credit hours for each course by the grade points earned, resulting in a sum of quality points
  • adding up all the quality points earned in one semester
  • dividing the sum by the total number of attempted credits for that semester

The same calculation can be applied to the total number of credits and quality points a student has earned during her/his time at the college.

When can students expect to see final course grades on their transcripts?

Briercrest’s faculty and administration strive to confirm final grades as soon as possible following the completion of each academic semester. In general, final course grades should appear on student unofficial transcripts within two weeks of the end of each semester’s Final Exam Period. Please contact Academic Services with questions about final grade availability.

What do “Academic Probation” and “Required to Discontinue” status mean on transcripts?

The purpose of an academic probation (AP) or required-to-discontinue (RTD) status is to notify the student that they are currently not on track for successful program completion (i.e., graduation) and to encourage the student to take steps toward achieving academic good standing as soon as possible. Academic good standing requires that a student have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, which is the requirement for successful program completion (i.e., graduation). For the full details of how AP and RTD work, see the Briercrest College Academic Calendar.

What does “Honours” status mean on transcripts?

For each semester, students are eligible for the Dean’s List (Honours) providing they are full-time (12 credits minimum) and achieve a minimum 3.70 semester GPA.

Also, Bachelor of Arts graduates are eligible for three levels of honours that are noted in the program description on their transcripts: 3.70 (Distinction), 3.85 (Great Distinction), and 3.95 (Highest Distinction) cumulative GPA.
